Nature speaks without talking.

Poem Artwork

'Coming diamonds, going rubies,' is a line from my mother, Jean Cothary's, poem "Freeway at Night".

 Aurora

Far from cities,

From freeways at night,

Coming diamonds,

Going rubies —

Far from noise,

From clash

And grapple,

From screech

And scream —

Far from clocks

And calendars,

And knowing

Or wondering —

Far from weighing in

Or checking out —

The silent music

Rose through the night,

In flames of magnificence

Across the sky.

Having on one, subzero night, while walking home around 11:30 p.m. spotted multicolored green, red, yellow, and blue and other variations of aurora borealis right at the zenith over my head, I was awestruck at the beauty and fragility of what I was viewing. Pulsing lights that came and went, seeming with some kind of random pattern. Your poem brought back that memory sharply.

Likewise, having traversed the second most winding street in South San Francisco to a friend's apartment, when I looked down at the 101 freeway passing by, it looked like a never-ending snake of lights that was quite mesmerizing.

You claim the beloved (and beautiful) AB far from many, many things and indeed it is; but you bring it near "in flames of magnificence". So lovely.

Like slowly pulling the string of a bow, allowing the arrow to gain its thrust ability and then releasing. So effortlessly travels the trajectory, needing not a specific target to feel fulfilled, allowing its passage through the density of jewel-like markers to be reward enough. Ah, such silent music impacts this reader as eyes close into imagination's darkness of illumination within.

It’s the best word imagery of aurora borrealis that I’ve read!
