She and Her Harmonica

The simplest instrument…fits in my hand, becomes my concert performed for myself.

Poem Artwork

My simple, little Lee Oskar.  My constant friend.

She and her harmonica
sing wordless songs together,
songs of Old Yeller, songs of Big Red
or songs of some jingleshoe feller instead.

Often....

A train whistle piece she'll try,
tumbleweed thistle, blue marble sky.
Sometimes she plays a haunting tune,
campfireside under fire opal moon.

And then….

she joins the children's dance.
She and her harmonica,

in her long ankle green dress.

For tens on tens of years she plays,
and blissfully her spirit pours
clear up until, breathless
from her jouncey repertoire,

—        inout she breathes no more.

A very unique and lovely poem, Diana. A pleasure to read.

Such a poignant story. In a single: poem. Where have all the harmonic players gone? I guess modern performances that stress a lot of dance and pyrotechnics don't suit them to simple mimicking of sounds you describe in the poem.

Based on your comment, I believe you may have been describing your harmonica journey. I hope you can pass it on to others in your family. I'm not sure anyone in my family will want my dad's CCC bugle that he played reveille and taps to grandma's distaste during holiday gatherings.

I have written a couple of poems inspired by the harmonica, a most intimate instrument enlivened by the spirit of the human breath. There is a haunting aspect to your poem that matches the haunting aspect of the lonely harmonica. Lovely work.

This brings back memories of my younger hippie days. I miss them. But just as your writing say, the journey must end.
