Poem Artwork

Many , thoughtful  people have made their mark abroad

Money raised for Pakistan was never, ever stored

I thought I'd help and so I went

To work and live in a cold tent

Because they needed care

With  many needing shelter, that's why I went out there

                         Earthquakes shake the land

                         Bring death disease and sorrow

                         Love concern and aid

                         Will build a new Tomorrow

So tents were put up quickly, white tents in the snow

Young children lost their way, they knew not where to go

But soon the Camp meant food, blankets and a school

Classes were in blue tents, not mixed as a rule

Life began again but it was cold

Winter was approaching, not welcomed by the old.

Camp doctors came from Cuba, wounds to mend and wounds to heal

Water tankers came each day, for the cooking of a meal

At four o'clock precisely, with no need for a ticket

Everyone took part, in playing the game of cricket

And when the darkness came

They huddled in their blankets, sheltered from the rain.

The camps are now all closed. They live in warmer days

Their tents are now back home, in Kashmir's sad sunrays

Days to clear the land, in hope to build once more

With heavy metal sheeting and wooden beams galore

They see a brighter future, returning to their land

It's because of thoughtful people, for lives they helped to mend.

Miller, thank you for this poem and for your caring work. I think many in "the West" do not grasp the Kashmir situation or the Pakistani/Indian relativity (or lack therof). Your writing helps to educate and inspire those who can make a difference. Write on!
