Memory Loss
“Hi Miller,” he said to me. “How are you?”
I looked at him and said ‘Fine.’
He looked familiar yet his name escaped me.
He spoke of my wife. How did he know her?
Who was this individual gone from my memory store?
‘Do you know who I am?’ he enquired.
I felt the pain of being found out.
‘Remember you? How could I not!’ I laughed.
But there was no humour in what I said.
He was not convinced.
‘I’m your next door neighbour,’ he said.
‘Which side? ‘I had to ask.
‘The one with the barking dog’, he replied.
‘Ah Hakan,’ I recalled. Haken....Marsden...
Marsden...Billy. Billy Marsden I remembered.
‘Must be going Billy,’ I said triumphantly.
