Canada has lost her share of soldiers in world conflicts but when we lose them to "Friendly Fire" it is doubly sad...

Poem Artwork

Death by Friendly Fire

In fatigue greens the soldier weary sleeps

Resting when they can from combat’s fight

All is calm beneath the Maple Leaf flag

Far to the rear they spent the night

Helmets for pillows and sand for a bed

Flak jackets for blankets not much is said

The sun kisses horizon when from out of the east

Jet engines whining leave behind dead

Friendly fire they called it, just a mistake

Tell that to the widow, the parents and child

A young man from Truro, one of Nova Scotia’s own

Will come back wearing a flag, so very alone

The last post will play to the bagpipes sad drone

Flag flown at half-mast as they lower him home

Teardrops and lost souls will bid him goodbye

Canada weeps for another…and all wonder why.

Canada, and the world. There is no such thing as 'friendly' fire, only scared 'soldiers [kids]' shooting at whatever scares them.

It is really sad that any life has to be taken because of war. You wrote a very interesting story here, but, how many lives has the U.S. lost to friendly fire? Also, how many lives have we saved by fighting the terrorists for so many countries that won't help get rid of them? Sorry for the loss to your country. Karen

What an original concept, to pen a poem about "friendly fire." Your poem, apart from being original, is a tribute and a warm understanding of the sacrifices of soldiers, Felix.

Fee I shivered as I read this...a wonderful tribute with such valid questioning. Who ever conjured up the idea to call it 'friendly'!? With tears and love, Panda :)
