Well spoken and imbued with truth. I'm reminded of an old boyfriend I had who bought me a condo and a car and took me on trips and it all looked so promising, but he was an evil player with plenty of power, money and cunning. I once knew a woman who this poem could be her story!!! (Me) I was just divorced (7 years ago) and it was the first man who I fell in love with after my ex husband. It hurt, but out sprang my poetry and now look at me, I am a poet! So good things do come from the darkness don't they! A poem many woman can relate to.
Predators and prey, naughty-boys and "I gonna change him for the better" when one is looking for oranges one shouldn't settle for pears. In life's salad one drop too many of vinegar can make it inedible...
Unfortunately so many woman look for a challenge in their lives, for the "bad boy" they can change and thus find the devotion and love so desperately wanted. But the offender in this wonderful poem, if understood correctly, was one that wanted to change rather than to be changed. So sad that good people, both male and female, cannot spot the demon that comes into their lives leaving the wreckage of their lives.

"...on a path of convenience" indeed...how well that's put and is so so on the money...the sneaky, opportunistic 'cads' who prey on the innocent and vulnerable and insecure; you've captured the hurt and great sadness, the betrayal, but with "now I must stand firm" an assertion begins, a finding of self and worth once more.

Carole, I am elated to see you have a new post. This poem about your friend's broken field of dreams, a failed romance that surely broke her heart. That she gathered her wits about her, recaptured her self esteem and moved on to new possibilities show immense courage and the desire to adapt, adjust and look for brighter horizons of love and romance. You captured the subtle nuances of that emotional roller coaster ride beautifully. The traps that dwell among loneliness and a desire for a meaningful relationship are difficult to see clearly. Carole, I'm sorry that happened to your friend...women are much more
vulnerable then men and our emotions are much stronger. No matter
who is at fault, one should never play with ones' emotions.
Read this carefully and I know how hurtful these kind of players are...but sadly they are not always the only ones at fault. Often lonliness and desire cause lonely people to read more than what is into relationships that often end in disastor. I am glad this is not about you and I hope your friend finds someone who has the same love goals as she does.
