Many old people aren't emotional better than those homeless of mine.
Some started with a numerous family until one day no one came anymore.
From the telly their hear only strangers wishing them a Merry Christmas

Poem Artwork

My name says that I am a Rose,
a withered one
on a old folk’s home,
getting to be ninety-one…

The first years everybody was here,
they came so I didn’t to be alone
when older son as Santa by the tree
shouted Ho! Ho! Ho! Welcome!
and from the bag took packets
full of toys and secret wonders
getting small screams of delight
from the little ones and from the older.

The second year a few were missing
sending regards with a bottle of cologne,
I suppose so I could get that old smell
that age added with time onto our bones;
and many postcards to set in a long row
like paper soldiers on the mantel over,
to say we are sorry for today’s absence
but next year, God’s willing, we will come.

The third was too busy a year, I ran from
and back to answer so many telephones,
saying they were wishing me so dearly
a Merry Christmas, and for absence atone,
I would be getting handmade fruit cake
from the very hands of all my daughters,
so, with every slice I eat will remember
they will be thinking of me their mother.

After that it wasn’t time for more call
what with one school’s plays or another,
some postcards do arrived like tears
far in between, making all so somber,
that Christmas became a dreary day
of wait and sit on a long corridor
having nothing merry to talk about
when the snow fall and you are alone.

A nun came the other day and asked
what I wished, and it will be done,
looking into her eyes I saw a promise
which only God could grant and allow,
to give me, for a lonely little prayer,
a Christmas without this four walls,
but there, where all the angels smile,
I wished for Him to take me Home.

My name says that I am a Rose,
a withered flower
in an old folk’s home,
a forgotten one.

This breaks my heart as it is so often the way, the elderly are soon forgotten and put aside, I have often told my children one day this will be me. I wish the younger generation would read this as they don't think now but one day they will be like a withered rose. Thank you for sharing.

George, the tears must fall when one reads this superb, but sorrowful poem. Having worked in those homes I can still see the scenario you have written about!

George here you experience the throwaway society syndrome at it's worst, and especially at Christmas, but this is also all year long!
You send a powerful message, wrote in the most delicate, feeling, and soul searching way possible thank you, and Bless You!

Years ago I was the engineer in a nursing home for about nine months. I left, my heart just couldn't take it anymore! The careless attitudes towards the elderly, the lack of compassion - like shuffling worn and bent cards out of a deck - always weighed heavily upon my soul. Everyday I cried in my office. It changed me!

Your compassion, Georg, is refreshing and so necessary in this world.
Blessings ...

Georg, when I was only 18 years old, I worked in a nursing home...I cried at night, envisioning the poor souls I saw in this place. Lined up along long corridors, with the smell of urine permeating the journey down. Some would try to scratch an itch but their hands were tied! I was told it was for their own good! I could list many disturbing thoughts that resurfaced here...It was an embarrassement to be a part of it, so I left!
Great message here...Everyone should heed!
Love and Peace~

So true with our busy lives we forget the ones who gave them to us.
Very powerful statement of truth, Georg.
(And don't worry, your fruitcake is on the way.)

Georg, when my Dad was in a nursing home, my Mom was there EVERY day from morning til night. We, his step-children, visited him several times a week, as did his daughters. I remember soooooo many of the other residents seldom had visitors. It was always sad to see this, so we'd say "hi" and ask if we could be of assistance. After Dad died, we don't visit anyone there. This is a powerful reminder of the plight of the older generation, and because of your poem, I will make an effort to visit. Every kindness is its own reward. Thank you for such a sensitive poem to address this.

God bless you. Kathy

So very, very sad, and there are far too many withered and forgotten Roses that won't have a joyous Christmas at all. Quite a powerful pen, Georg.
