Another Kind of Christmas

When everybody gave up only a true friend will follow us to the end, unconditionally and only asking for a little bit of warmth from out heart.
The Homeless know that, because they are the only ones that can say, "they are more much than friends, they are the only family we got"....

Poem Artwork

It has been days since he was here,
and I am keeping his house warm…

We have been together for ten years,
a meeting of two solitary strays,
I was then a little abandoned kitten,
and he was a dispossessed good man.

During those years we were chased
from alleys, under bridges and portals,
and he took all his belongings and went
but never forgot to take me, no once.

Last Christmas was cold and windy,
the snow chased both of us too bad,
I got my paws painfully frostbitten
and he got to cough by day and night.

I thought that by summer he will be
to the happy himself returning back,
but when the Fall arrived he was weak
even to touch my head with his hand.

Since then, passing by the church,
I have stopped by the stable outside
to ask the immobile people there
if they can come and cure my poor dad.

He went after Burger King lost its doors
to fetch our supper from the dustbin cans,
and I wait and wait but he never came and
on this Christmas Eve I don’t want to cry.

This will be the first time that he and me
will be from each other apart on our lives,
he had only one and I suppose he’s gone
to wait up there for me to live all my nine.

I know that he wouldn’t be coming back,
but I will keep his house warm…

Oh, this is sad and heartfelt!!! I know how you must feel about abandoned pets owned by people who are abandoned by the society. This brought me to tears. My eyes are wet.

Very thoughtful write indeed!!! I hope the kitty will be rescued by some kind-hearted people.

You touch my heart and made it cry. The plight of the homeless, not just people, is a sad commentary on our society. If you're going to have pets, get them spayed or neutered, and take good care of this extended part of your FAMILY. Your heart is one of the kindes that I've had the honor to know.

God bless you. Kathy

Georg,

Tears falling down my face, can barely see to review--from the opening two lines to the last, this one hits with hard reality. The lost, the abandoned, brought together because each knows the others' pain...well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

"they are much more than friends, they are the only family we got"....

How true that is for many souls, and there was a time it was even true for me. They never give up on us, and when not one other soul can be found to be a friend, they are still right by our side, and they never ever ask for much of anything, except a little love.

Your story also sadly reminded me of a faithful old dog I found still guarding a destroyed house after Katrina. His human family was never coming back, but months after the hurricane, there he was on the front steps - starving, dehydrated, and full of mange - yet still diligently guarding that house - and hoping with all his heart that his humans would one day return.
