Blackest lava cooled into fierce jagged sharp craggy mountains of rock,
Where we stand, above the roar of Pacific blue,
My skin wet with light rain and my heart surging with exhilaration and awe…
We feel the earth’s impressive power on the cliffs of Kaumahina.
Black sand beach surviving the crash and rush of the ocean’s assault,
As we look down from the highest crags and drink in the cool moist air,
Two souls filled with adventure and amazement in a tropical paradise…
Far away from our mundane home in our cluttered land.
I have never seen the ocean with such supremacy.
I have never experienced a tingling of trepidation at the sheer overwhelming force of nature’s lifeblood, thunderous waves exploding with monumental vigor on the cliffs.
I have never felt so connected with the earth…
or so helpless in the face of the ocean’s intensity.
We stood on the cliffs of Kaumahina and witnessed the supremacy of the Pacific
Smashing its power over the earth’s strongest rock.
We stood there together in the rain and the mist, the roar and the surge.
We stood on top of jagged lava rocks and trembled before the paradise of blue and white water, black sand, and the myriad of tropical green jungle surrounding Kaumahina like respecting spectators at a grand demonstration.
We stand together and then walk reluctantly away from paradise and terrible forces.
We leave Kaumahina unchanged but our souls keep its memory within.
We leave forever but the memory of fury and beauty will follow us always.
