Pondering the state of the art of Poetry in the last half-century...

Will it be woe, verse’s wasteland, we’re known?
Fading footprints poetize the decades
we’ve bridged with barren missive, arid moan,
lofty sound leading injury parades.
Myriads self-impale on poetic swords,
bemoan their being, pains unparalleled,
flailing what peace prosperity affords!
Such, the bards of ages would’ve marveled.
*Lest we forget, holocaust Phoenix flies,
history’s ashes of wars pile up behind.
Who but author tells truth of our time, cries
to redefine our direction, maligned?
We have to have coetaneous art to last!

Great sonnet, I agree. When I was first published in a coauthored anthology, of course I bought a few books and tried to sell them. It was illuminating; can't tell you the number of people who said they didn't like to read, much less poetry. Sad statement of fact. Thank you for this post.

Great sonnet. The last two lines capture the essence of art:
"Lasting art is honest; timeless and coetaneous; in touch
with the world we inhabit; evokes deep emotions from such."
The movement in the arts in the last half of the 20th century has been labeled "postmodernism", which rejects authoritarian notions of universal truths and values. As Nietzsche said: "There are no facts, only interpretations." This is where we are.

to speak with our voice, redefine our direction, maligned? "
