I wrote this because I am a grandfather. I have wondered how the CEO’s of the giant oil companies and any others that pollute our Earth can live with the knowledge that their children and grandchildren are going to pay the price for their great success. The fact is, if it is destroying our Earth, can they really call it a success?

When a Baby Smiles

When he smiles I can see teeth that are brand new.
I see the sparkle in his eyes come shining through.
That sparkle no doubt is reflected in my own eyes, I’m sure.
He reaches for me and I cuddle him close to reassure.
I am not sure what his future will bring.
I know not whether as he grows older he will see the spring.

At least, I am not sure he will see it like I have as a child.
It was a wondrous time when the breezes were soft and mild.
The air seemed clearer and the sky was bluer to me.
Possibly that, though is just because these old eyes do not see.

My grandchildren will live in a time when global warming is news.
The price they will pay because our generation will abuse.
And these, along with generations before have been changing the Earth.
Stripping it of its natural resources and dimensioning its worth.
We need to think of our children and their grandchildren and then theirs.
We need to work for a better, cleaner Earth before a destructive wind stirs
And gives our decedents a world full of pollution.
Every generation that passes without a solution
Will make things more lethal with toxic fumes so impure.
Our children and grandchildren will be unable to endure.
Tell the people in power that this is important not only to us but to those who come after.
Let’s work together so that our children will find comfort and laughter.
God put man in charge of taking care of Earth.
Let us stand up and declare with all that we are worth
That now is the time to clean up the air,
The water, the soil and show that we care.
