A pet peeve of mine. People who do not take care of their health and then fall back on others to care for them and pay their medical bills from youthful selfish indulgence.

Just Self-Medicating © Toons (Mark Lynch)

Doctoring

It's good to have a health check,

professionally once every year.

Better than self-medicating,

with voodoo, fear or beer.

For it's better to know early,

when health problems emerge.

And dispatch them quickly,

before they become a dirge.

For youth is truly wasted,

on the young who ignore,

their health with bad habits,

they pick up by the score.

The greatest health hazard,

is easy access to food.

We overindulge in excess,

with the whims of our mood.

Resulting in statistics that show,

the fatter, the unhealthier, we grow.

With so many choices,

we make every day.

It's so easy to make wrong ones,

so easy, just to fall prey.

To quacks of the health trade,

with a new miracle cure a minute,

diets, supplements, organics, herbals,

a plethora of health gimmicks in it.

When the answer is simply,

living life well and living it right.

Why waste one's life to spend,

your later years in living hell?

So, self-doctor yourself,

for all its long-term worth.

Your health is in your care,

from your very birth.

Yo Ron, don't be tellin' the world about me as you seem to have done in this write. Only since I was in my mid 50's did I become more diligent with regards my health, though it has not helped all that much, but we all gotta die eventually, be it from a life of ill health or worse...-e-

Great advice and you do make a great deal of sense here, Ron. I try to walk 8kms (five miles) each day, on most days I do more than that, just to stay in shape. Thank you for sharing. Love and peace,

Regis.

A rather harsh judgment on the youth. Nobody plans out to get sick, and no one wants to. The youth need adult guidance to warn them about health risks. If the responsible adults don't give them, it's as much their fault. Youth are too young to be blamed, even judiciary it is so. And addictions require usually more than just a decision to stop them. Leave it to the ones that know!

I used to not seeing a doctor in 10 years when I was younger, now I just see my doctor whenever I need my medications. You are right, never hurts to be good to oneself and often have the doctors check us out.

My hubby died because he didn't find out the cancer in him until it was in stage 4, which pretty well had set the stage for destruction. He was gone in 3 years. So, please, everyone, often do a complete physical checkup!

Yes , we need to take care of our selves if possible. No one knows their body better than them selves. If something is wrong , tend to it and face it head on. It is not always easy but if ones tries they will succeed in one way or another. One has to keep going forward and not give up. There is a lot of information on the internet and one can obtain incite into a problem. Getting medical help should be a priority! Mary Grace

You are so right Ron, life is short and we need to protect our physical, mental and emotional health. Sometimes the later years can be the best years if we take care of ourselves. Love the poem with your usual, wonderful rhyme and flow.

I guess I was one of the worse when it came to "self-doctoring" myself over the years. It continues on today.

Ron,
Great article. Take your power back. Observe your mood and watch the habits. No doctor can do it in 15 minute visit but us. They can assist but we are in charge of outcome for most part.

Rather enjoyed this one, Ron. Everything about it is ticklesome, but with a hard grain of medical laboratory quality truth behind it. Very nice! It flows off the tongue into the mental gullet as easily as cherry-flavored cough syrup. :)

Good advice for sure. As they say , "If I'd known I wold live this long, I would have taken better care of myself." My dad smoked 2 packs a day for years. Despite pleas to stop, he'd reply, "Gotta die from something." And he died from lung cancer.
