I first joined this site to promote my book. I had written poems in the past and had already posted some of them on my other site. I started writing more of them here because I was spurred by the many others who were posting. I wanted to share a part of me with you. Before I knew it I was completely addicted to writing these poems. The wonderful friends who have been tracking my work have been a wonderful source of encouragement. I used the argument which this poem is based on when I was a salesman with a local radio station. Advertisers were moving more and more to TV. They would say a picture is worth a thousand words. I beg to differ.
A picture paints a thousand words
At least that’s what they say.
I say a picture cannot catch
the waves that surge in so many different ways.
But if thou give me a thousand words,
I’ll paint a more beautiful picture any day.
Be it about men who fight with swords
Or memories of those who have passed away.
I can describe the waves flowing to and fro
or the beauty of the sky.
I can tell you how I picture them
and explain to you just why.
I can describe the soft pink dogwood blossom
as it slowly forms in spring.
I can catch the essence of the autumn air
when crickets no longer sing.
A thousand words cannot describe
the beauty of Gods creation,
But a picture is frozen still in time
without movements’ revelation.
But as I describe the sun which comes
peaking over the eastern horizon,
You can simply close your eyes
and allow yourself to imagine.
The thousand words is a beginning
one which you can build upon.
You can start from there and see
the stars, the planets and the sun.
There is a wonderful joy in simply letting
your mind fill in the blanks.
It can bring back childhood fishing trips
with Dad standing on river banks.
This is why I am driven to write
about life’s cares and joys.
For my writings are meant to spur
the minds of little girls and boys.
I also write for men and women of all ages
who will indulge themselves to try.
They can see the wonder of life
In all its fullness as if watching dreams go by.
Lew, you do come up with some wonderful writes! Awesome tree! "They" say a picture paints a thousand words...perhaps, but who can see depth in a picture unless it is in motion. Words on paper are powerful; words on paper can impact the masses in different ways; words spoken are more likely to deliver the meaning intended. A picture might mean one thing to me and something else to you. So what's the use, if not to confuse. Keep on writing, Lew, I enjoy reading what you write.
A wonderful poem, Lew, made only that much better by your enchanting imagery which is like word paintings. Excellent writing and a joy to read.
Love and respect,
CJ
The experiences are quite facinating but the tree is in my front lawn and is now spreading it's leaves up and down the block. I love my tree. I wonder what my neighbors think.

Well I can say that pictures are visual and you have to examine them well and not give them a cursory look. Words spurn your imagination but also need concentration and careful reading. Well reason poem. Victor
These song lyrics and art are tales, tides and twinkling lights - tunes telling stories of warmth and sun, city and sand, paths that lead, and the coins we can keep in the Karma Bank. Spirit's been bypassed for sorrow, dreaming of a better tomorrow .
And thank God, you decided to do so! I truly enjoy every word you pen...
The words create the picture..the picture preserves it.
I like what Victor said, too..
Great use of graphic!
