Diamond In The Rough

Love can be elusive or just an arms reach away. Is what we seek in one we love perfection or is it one who has weathered life's storm and will endure?

What is this love?

A many faceted crystal. 

Treasured jewel only few can afford.

Polished smooth surfaces of words

mirroring lustrous love in your heart,

while sharp edges of passion ignite

inner most, intimate spaces.

 

The depth and sparkle the sun gives your eyes,

a setting of simplicity complicated

by haunting, pronged hues when magnified,

dangling on braided, silken cord,

prismatically darting yellows and blues

a tempting reach away.

 

I want to capture it, bring it close to me.

wear it next to my heart...

a symbol of commitment and longing.

It should be enjoyed, cherished

proudly displayed for all the world to see,

never encased in smothering glass

...even if our world is only you and me.

 It should glisten with captured light 

protected from a thief that would steal,

even those least suspected, clouding truth,

foreboding paths…carats of doubt.

 

I covet this elusive gem

I thought would forever elude me.

Imagine it from afar as moon casts solemn spell...

Its beam captured and projected upon my soul,

Carbon hardness riveting,

yielding to explosive dispersion of light

releasing the reflective brilliance.

I’ll keep it safe, yield to its splendor,

never lock it away.

 

Love....

as that jewel that hangs about my neck

caresses the softness of sepia skin,

kisses the nape when it becomes tangled

in silver chain or silken linens

warmed and wrinkled by passion’s embrace.

Gentle pause for touch in passing...

pendulous memory

so subtle, so seductive,

so valuable, so rare.

 

A diamond in the rough.

is there a tougher stone?

...And no wonder diamonds are used in heart surgery, Taylor! Wonderfully sustained metaphor and simile here... a gorgeous fully-wrought poem, but, for me, the final stanzas/denouement are the Jewel In The Crown and stand alone. This shines! TY Kate xx

You have captured something very special here Taylor, your insight and words along with the visual imagery are stunning and so deeply moving! May that "elusive gem" find the warmth of your "sepia skin" and remain proudly displayed there forever.

Your powerful imagery serves to etch in the reader's mind the sentiments that you wish to share. Someone recently described love to me this way:



"Love has a different tune: I love you, therefore you are free to do as you wish. My love says you cannot do any wrong in my sight. My love says you cannot hurt me for it would not wish to make you responsible for the way I feel. My love says I am here for you if you want me, or I can be gone if that is what you wish. My love does not depend on your performance to exist - it depends entirely on a choice I make, moment by moment. My love accepts that you may even come to hate me for what I am and it is strong enough not to compromise itself to please you. My love cannot be manipulated. My capacity to love is infinite and is not bound by your feelings or desires."
