Refereed journalism has been lost in the Internet age. We now get news of worldwide events and threats in real time without benefit of their validity. The major news outlets have been guilty of publicizing false or politically motivated stories at an increasing rate in an effort to scoop the competition. Online social networks and blogs exacerbate the situation. Fear mongering is rampant. We must all stand back and justify our fears. Are they real or imagined?

Information Nation

We live in a time of change,
but it's always been that way.
That change is accelerating,
we can't deny today.

I sense a sense of fear,
from those both near and far.
And that sense of fear,
is raised to a new high bar.

I wonder why this is so,
when the world is better each year?
What's happening, "out there."
Affects us like it's, "here."

The Internet and cell phones,
capture events worldwide.
And transmit them to us,
in a nano second ride.

The  world is at our fingertips,
and constantly barging in.
What we once never knew about,
becomes a constant din.

Some have totally turned it off,
while some have tried to join in.
So many fear from what they hear,
and think the world is falling into sin.

Nothing could be further from the truth,
those things have always existed.
With all the information now available,
the distant becomes personal, twisted.

So, relax and embrace the newfound truth,
do not rely on memory's innocent past.
For the good old days were really bad,
they just kept it from you until the last.

Learn how to detect misinformation,
because it's out there in scads for you.
Be thankful for the good information,
let your mind work to find the true .

And remember, things are getting better,
not worse, all the time.
Fear makes us do stupid things,
without reason, without rhyme.

the sad truth is there is a lot more disinformation out there and the media scrambles in its quest to be politically correct rather than bear the truth. It is just as you said...it is hard to distinguish a story from what it true especially when it is the media that makes the news more than it does in reporting it.

Yes, Ron what you say is true but, when I was growing up we didn't have the news that is out there today.....technology has taken the toll on communications and such. We all need to tune out for awhile.

Always,

Deborah

I often find the world overwhelming but I appreciate the technology that allows me to communicate with others and to obtain useful information (I just filter out the nonsense). I do love your positive outlook, Ron. Love and peace to you,

So true. Social media has become quite the propaganda machine, it's easier than ever for extremists to gain supporters on made up news articles and posts. Elections are lost and won on social media. Now if only the good guys figured this out they could blow the lid on all the misinformation, instead of refusing to get involved in all the frenzy.

You've made some palpable points about fear; certainly an insidious manipulator in every level of human existence. However, I don't see how anyone can 'justify fear' as you've promulgated. What do you do, absolve it? Apologize for it? Excuse it, rationalize it, vindicate it. Fear is a form of bondage and you can only overcome it with a greater force... LOVE. There are certainly many differing reports about what is happening globally. Everyone has their opinion; more often than not born of personal experience, prejudice, and what an individuals research reveals. Finding differing levels of importance/relevance one journalist puts on a subject compared to another is very similar to what poets, writers, and bloggers do on the internet. Some are seeking accuracy and truth, and some are seeking followers. Thanks for sharing...

Again, your poem makes the top of the list, Ron, in popularity.

Are we too weak for freedom? Your poem brings that question to mind when so much good and bad information is out there.

One of the best things i've ever done was to stop watching the cable news shows. My Dad always said, believe half of what you hear and half of what you read. Wise words indeed.

So true. I am sometimes sidetracked off the internet superhighway to some junk mail news that draws my attention to something as significant as smelly garbage. It's difficult to trust any of these morons who want to steal your wallet and identity. They rob us of our precious time as well. I don't watch commercial TV anymore. I hear enough garbage on the radio in my car. For the first time in my life I rented a car with Sirrus radio so we could listen to pure music without so many interruptions. So there is a way around the mess.
A Good write Ron! Merry Christmas!

In the main, points well made. Some things are getting worse, however. Pollution is one. Global warming another. Inequality still another. Stupid reactions to events are faster, thus they make stupidity look as it it's getting worse. Fortunately, I am dodging better even though my reaction time is down. I think I am going to lose this race. Thanks for your optimism. I need it.

Don't know Ron, maybe I am being depressing but I like hearing about all the doomsayers as they tell us the world is coming to an end, I think of those that say they want to be "taken" to heaven before the end of the world, but I would rather be here and see what happens, as I hate to leave a movie in the middle or put down a good book when its not finished...-e-
