Food Pyramid

They say we’re growing fatter,

As our days go waddling by,

That it’s mind over matter,

Pyramid diet we should try.

I have, as Uncle Sam wants,

I thought it was working well,

Behind me the mirror haunts —

And what’s there makes me yell!

The Food Pyramid — gospel for years,

From those purported to know,

Preaching to undiscriminating ears,

We all thought it the way to go.

Each meal it wasn’t our intention,

For food pyramid to overflow,

Yet we didn’t pay much attention,

When they said keep calories low,

Perhaps Atkins is on the right track,

To invert Pyramid of USDA.

Maybe reduce shape of my back,

Lower the numbers when I weigh.

But real message is loud and repeating,

If we’d live a robust, healthy way,

We’ll adopt attitude about our eating,

That naturally keeps the fat away.

I'm still laughing at that picture. I think that's me on the right! Hahaha! Very few carbs, a little lean meat, more fruit and vegetables plus plenty activity/walking, seems to work best for me as long as I use a little olive oil and lemon juice as my salad dressing. My problem is in the activity area. I drive everywhere, even to the mail box on the corner...and of course I sit a lot, writing and enjoying my computer. Thanks for this delightful post, Leland!

The food pyramid grows healthy bodies. Once grown, the body requires much less to sustain. I maintained a 30 inch waist for thirty years by going from teenage glutton to a moderate, selective eater. Even in a wheelchair, I eat what I want, never exercise, and have no chloesterol, heart, or blood sugar problems. Skinny is truly the key to long life. Just deprive yourself and take a vitamin supplement. Viola! A healthy, long life. Good shape, too. Was there a poem?

One way to lose weight, stop eating so much, in fact it is the only way. Enjoyed the message.

Hi Leland,
Really resonate with the end of this. I have come to believe
the "balance" is unique to everybody, and the key is not listening
to the plans "out there" but Really Listening from within. It took me
about three years--but once I stuck to the path following my body's
instructions, I don't battle weight anymore. Vicky

You have written on a subject that has been a peeve of mine for many years. That Food Pyramid is a lie, and not only should be reverted, but some things eliminated altogether. I mean, do we really believe everything the government tells us? Great write, Leland!

LOL...Leland this is so cute. Did you read the article in the February issue of Discover on how screwed up the USDA's food pyramid's guidelines are? Oh man, this poem is right on the money.
