A young girl's first night as a restavek

Poem Artwork

I am in a new place today

With people who are not so gay

It has been a very sad day

Full of unpredictable dismay

On a cold, hard floor I lay

I am not allowed to play

I feel like running away

Maybe it’s better to pray

Maybe someone might save the day

I’m really falling apart today

I don’t know what else to say

I wish I didn’t have to stay

I miss my Tiville already

I am as sad as a bad malady

I do sleep next to an alley

That smells bad and dirty

My heart is yearning for Tiville

There are no stars in Belleville

I miss the beautiful daffodils

I miss running down the hills

Here the sky seems to look so dark

Around here the dogs don’t even bark

All they have is the beautiful park

Should this be viewed as a mark?

I see no mountains when I look ahead

I am so afraid of what might lie ahead

I feel such a huge pain in my head

I have not even had a piece of bread

Sadness takes refuge in my lonely heart

When can I expect the cloud to depart?

I knew this would happen from the start

When from all of you I was forced to part

I don’t know what the future holds

For now I must try to be bold

My pride will never be sold

I know someday I will be whole

Because I do not know my destiny

With my life I am in harmony

Trying to hold on to my sanity

And now I will reach for serenity

For tomorrow I might not wake

Who is to say what it will take?

Here there seems to always be a wake

All I can do is pray hard for my sake

As always, I feel no sorrow

Because I believe in a good tomorrow

Where I go from here, I don’t know

With faith I will continue to grow

I hope that things will improve

Because I have nothing to prove

And absolutely nowhere to move

All I can do is rely on heaven above

And hopefully, some good old day

Someone with a heart might come my way

Notice the pain in my heart and say

Come here child! Let me take you away

This is beautiful...not only about restaveks, but also about all of those who feel lonely and downtrodden and look to the source of light above for strength and courage to face another day.
