At age eleven,he was an altar boy
stayed one until 15,when older friends
showed him more interesting things...at
18,graduated high school,became a soldier
in the mafia family,in his neighborhood

Sal progressed nicely,he was a natural
by age 22,he had a few notches on his belt
he didn't like to kill, but being in the drug
trade,it became difficult to avoid it,his
mother knew he was in the mafia, but she
would never believe her Salvatore would
murder anyone

In the years 1930 to 1960, the mafia was
strong, and many of the neighborhood kids tried
to join to become runners,in the lower echelons
due to gambling, drugs, and prostitution, and the
sixties heralded in the drugs and porn big time
Sal however so exceptional was elevated to
higher things, when the Capo di tuti(Head Boss)
took a liking to him

Most of the young guys were ignorant and
thought it fantastic to be promoted by the big
boss, but as they became more wise they
hoped it wouldn't happen to them, though
they'd never admit it,,,

Sal was 47 when he died in a gun battle outside
of St. Patrick's Cathedral - Manhattan/ Midtown
East - New York, NY... he asked for a priest,  a
Bishop, came out knelt in the street next to him and
heard his confession, after which he told Sal,"Your
sins are forgiven, you will be in heaven soon." He

died before the ambulance got there

~*~

This story is fact, and it gave many believers
Christians especially,a lot to argue about,In
churches the priests homily explained  how this
was a perfect example of the "eleventh hour"
I wonder how my readers feel about it!

Sol got what he wanted, so he died happy--if he wasn't hurting. The church got publicity and the story got repeated. There is nothing redeeming in the life of a crook.

Words of a priest at death have no affect on the dying, only the living who hear or learn of them.

Eileen, this is a poignant piece you have penned -- you have raised the level of awareness for anyone who reads your poem -- perhaps more of us will always seek to make, the right choices in life, rather than the wrong -- may love, peace, and joy, walk your path -- JMW

We, for the most part, choose the path we take in life, and ultimately pay and collect on those choices. It is not for us to judge others, but it is God's choice.
Dear Lady, you sure to know how to get us thinking...and maybe looking in our mirrors! :o)

A somewhat heated topic...
I think that repentance and forgiveness are private and personal matters. In our hearts we will feel true forgiveness...I think of it in situations where maybe you have hurt someone and you ask them to forgive you. I have been in situations where the "offended" party did not truly forgive. It is difficult to gain peace in those situations...at least to me. I guess I am trying to say that forgiveness is a two way street. In the end...it is for God to judge and grant...and as the scriptures say...the Lord looketh on the heart.

i don't understand the eleventh hour?? i am afraid i do not believe in the idea that he can be promised Heaven-we just don't know and i am sure those who loved the ones he murdered would have a different idea....

This one is tough! I've laughed about this one before; yet...have also gotten a little heated with the idea....however...only GOD can judge...and just because the Priest says he's forgiven...doesn't mean that GOD has believed the 11th hour confession....so...I just prefer to let God do the judging...and those who want to live wild with the hopes of using the 11th hour confession to save their soul...well...it's a gamble isn't it? good writing, thought provoking indeed! hugs, lindalaw

The final judge of where he will go is when he is judged by God. We can hope when we ask for forgiveness in the eleventh hour God will be merciful to us even if we weren't in our life. Thought provoking write.

God, does not ask for his forgiveness, He and his eternal soul, up on reflection in the eternal universe, will have to consolitade all that he is and was and want's to become, when and if it takes on form again as an expression. Institutionalized forgiveness is a miscarriage of justice in this world or the next, I doubt if God would approve, if He is involved at all in the process. Love in this world, and the forgiveness that is love, springs from a human soul, hopefully for the better without God at all, that soul also knows who it is when it reaches its final moments in this life, words of the priest are at best comforting. What I am saying in short, you are the one who loves or condems yourself, there are no easy ways out, God I am sure will not interfere. Hugs! Jasmin Horst

It makes me shiver to think that someone can live a life of crime and then merely confess at the end...to absolve their guilt & get a ticket into Heaven. I guess I have a mean streak...cuz I hope he didn't make it through those gates without further soul-work. A great topic, Eileen. Love and Hugs,

Not long ago the Pope in Roma sold absolution to the very rich for an absurd sum of money.
That make me wonder, but I believe that sincere repentance will be more appreciated by our Heavenly Father.

Quite thought provoking, Tiger Lily. Makes one wonder if it's that easy to gain salvation, what's the point of trying to live a good life. I'd hate to gamble eternity, on that one last hour.

I have always believed that we have a very forgiving Father who loves us unconditionally but does this mean we can live our life however we chose knowing we will get forgiven in our time of death and still enter through the gates of Heaven.
Your words are sure making me think Eileen. Thank you for sharing another great write dear as always very enjoyable.

Your title grabbed me. Salvatore's history, mafia-driven, happens every day in drug cartels, radical fundamentalist organizations, mercenary militias, and dictatorial juntas around the world. The mafia was a combo of all of the above. La Familia has less to do with blood than with concentrated and conserved power. The priest said his ritual words when Salvatore fulfulled the confessional requirements, but the priest's words were spoken by a human. God does not need for any human to be His mouthpiece. The matter of Heaven will be between Salvatore and God, remembering that confession and absolution are institutional rituals constructed by men to serve the ideological purposes of men, and God is not available for comment. As for a human to pass judgement on this, we see a good time to "let go and let God."

"forgiveness of sins" neither condons nor tolerates the doings, it provides the acknowledgement of the doings...we are all divine in the eyes of god
