The months and years
Stretch between us,
An endless parade
Of hours and days
And weeks,
Of memories than linger
And won't be denied.
You made me promise
That if you didn't return
I wouldn't let myself die
With you;
You made me promise
That I'd live my life
To its fullest,
That I'd chase my dreams
And make my mark
By making a difference,
And I've kept that promise.
But there is one promise
I have not kept,
That I could not keep,
And that is
To love again.
There have been men
Who were friends,
And even a lover or two,
But none of them
Found a place in my heart
Because there is no room
For them there.
How can there be
When you live on
Inside me
As young and vital
As you were
So long ago?
You dwell there, but
There is no bitterness
Only a sorrowful acceptance
That while I walk the earth
We can not walk together.
But there is still joy
For I know
There will come a time
When I have done
All I was meant to do here
That I will join you
