Egyptian religion, mythology, magic etc. has long been seen as the origin point for later developments in Western and Middle-eastern cultures. 'Hermapolis' explores the place of scribes in Egyptian culture and society.
This poem is inspired by Egyptian mythology, specifically the ancient history of Hermapolis (mod: El Ashmunein) - the place where the Scribe deity Thoth and his consort Ma'at had a marvelous temple. The poem explores the relevance of the concept of Ma'at (truth, cosmic balance/patterns, justice, emotional truth, protection against chaos, etc.) to writers and creatives of all ages.
PS: I deliberately leave it up to readers to guess at the 'corruption' that afflicts creativity and the greater society in the era the 'time travellers' come from ...
As I recall writing about a time in ancient Egypt in the 2nd chapter of my 2nd novel, all the elements were there: deceit, corruption, jealousy, pestilence, and vice, to name but a few. And was about to admire your scholarship about the time and place until I read it and discovered that your poem contains timeless messages that do not require delving into the Old or New Kingdom. Nonetheless, your words are enlightening.
