A Native American grandfather was talking to his grandson about how he felt about a tragedy. He said, 'I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is the vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is the loving, compassionate one.' The grandson asked him, 'Which wolf will win the fight in your heart?' The grandfather answered, 'The one I feed.'*

Two Wolves
By La Bellle Rouge
each day i have a choice
which wolf i will feed
i can nourish the spirit of love
or feed the demons of hate
i can lift up my eyes to heaven
and find the bright butterfly of joy
or cast eyes down into the pit
to vision all the beasts of pain and fear
i can choose to walk
the path of forgiveness
or let loose the brutal dogs
of hatred and revenge
each day i must choose
for no one can be neutral
i can plant seeds of greatness
or sow a crop of dark despair
i can find my safe sancturary
or stand unprotected in the blizzard
i can shelter the hearts of others
or send them homeless into the storm
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy. *
I know wolves are dangerous, but they are one of God's most beautiful creatures. A most loving, spiritual piece you have written! Enjoyed this very much.
we have to nurture the compassionate wolf but not totally refrain from feeding or denying the violent wolf ... if we don't, it will become so vicious, it will devour the loving wolf ... this is the way of nature ... balance ...
i've always enjoyed that proverb, as well as the "...which side of the grass is greener?...the one you water the most" and St. Francis' prayer is another great wisdom too...thanks for putting it all together in this piece of comfort today
A most wonderful poem woven around the beauty and wisdom of that proverb, Belle. Music and graphic complete to make the heart swell and the mind melt. You have elaborated the theme and picked out that central truth, moving it into action with the dynamic of prayer. A sincere and peace-inspiring offering. Thank you. Love Kate xx
What a beautiful, yet inspiring, write! I've never heard this legend. A keeper, full of wisdom. Well done!

I read a similar proverb, but it was about a black dog and a white one, they would race, one man keep winning the bets, when asked how he did it, he said "I bet on the one I feed"
So true, what we feed our minds is what is our destiny. Grat poem, it's what every person in the world should live by, starving the greedy mind..
Dear Belle - i gave some crit on a poem this morning, on this same proverb, to a friend who lives in India - your poem and the prayer is the struggle within us all, and the poem the friut of feeding/nourishing the right one - a gem of a poem, peace be with you La Belle, Nicky x
The drug called "The Shari" has been used for vision quests over many years. But, when all the rivers start drying up, the tribe must send a young hunter named Tomás on a much more important trip through the Amazon.

How true, La Belle. And I've always liked that Native American story, and, of course, that prayer of St. Francis.
