FireStorms Approaching

Tenderly, I hold my baby,
Protection from the smoke
that is surrounding us
like an unwanted blanket of doom.

I travel to the North,
with my three children
trying to escape the fire storms
approaching from the south.

The Great spirit of the Elders
protect my every move,
I walk along the riverbed
to keep us safe and cooled.

The Fire storms are moving quicker
than I can travel.
I am frightened, but cannot allow
myself to stop.

The countryside is filled with fire,
revenge has take over,
and the the war parties have begun,
destroying the white man's world.

I must keep moving North,
for the elders have spoken.
I know Tomas's spirit is with us,
and that is what keeps us going.

I fear for my baby's life,
she is so tiny and unable to cry,
I believe she has no voice.
I will tend to her when we are safe.

This journey is very treacherous,
there are many enemies,
the fire storms and Standing Bear's men.
They will be very angry upon their return.

When they realize we have left,
they will come looking for us.
We must find a clever place to sleep
to keep safe from the fire storm and the men.

Upon the fall of evening,
I will have a plan,
No one will find us
and no one will ever hurt us again.

The voice of Tomas sings out to me,
He is guiding me
toward freedom and safety
He is my guiding light among this darkness.

I shall escape the fire storms,
find safety among nature,
and dwell among my people once again,
giving my children the heritage they deserve.

"Oh Spirit of the Elders,
Here my prayer,
Help me to find shelter from this storm,
and bring light back into my soul.
