freedom is a mystic thing
it blooms as the bright desert rose
it presses its way through granite
it survives, no boundaries knows
freedom of the heart can never
be caged nor fettered in chains
free thought will forever survive
it beyond all adversity remains
the eagles' cries incline my flight
to realms where darkness recedes
and i stand upright clothed in light
a lone feather to grace my hair
the eagle and i, not afraid to fly
our vast domain is everywhere
they believed they took it all
our language, our sacred land
our names, our god, our freedom
thinking we’d no longer stand
but freedom is a mystic thing
and we yet arise on eagle wings
the songs of the ancients
still heard from afar yet ring
though the hills our spirits roam

A sad thing, is that Indians knew/know how to live at one with creation, such wisdom we should have learned from, they were/are awake to life, most of our world lives whilst asleep, and dying without waking..
This sure is a classic beauty--better go in your next book! Cool thing about reading you, you just keep learning stuff I wouldn't have imagined. You should read "A Cherokee Feast of Days" by Joyce Sequiche Hifler: major inspiration behind my song: "Comanche" (just the verse part)
Nice juxtaposing of what freedom is. All the descriptions you used are aptly undergirded with the need for strength and the tangible application of such.
If - by using 'mystic' as the adjective - you mean beyond ordinary understanding, or not easily percieved by our senses, or grasped by the mind - I must agree with your contention LaBelle.
Freedom is also intemperately influenced by many aspects of individual and collective pride ... the pride of culture, the pride of personal vision or expressionism, the individual or tribes pride to act, or think, or speak without outwardly imposed constraints - given these possibilities this write can easily take on a new dimension which gives it a universal application.

Beautiful verse about a strong and proud nation. I loved the verse, "it presses its way through granite". This shows the real strength and determination of the Native American. Very enjoyable read.

A wonderful tribute to Native Americans. They have so much wisdom to offer if we only open our hearts and listen.
Beautifull tribute to our Native roots, yours Cherokee, mine Choctaw. Really am a descendant of a Choctaw Princess. This tells our story beautifully just as the lady who wrote it is.
Belle, I do not know if I have Cherokee in my background, but by God, I feel so connected to this it is resonating throughout my body.
