What on Earth is Earth Day?

It starts with a global cleanup
Give a hoot! Don’t pollute!
Leave a very small footprint
Generate less debris
By recycling instead of dumping
Protect our forests
Those stately trees
That cleanse our air
and caress our breeze.
Is there life elsewhere?
Almost certainly.
But in all this vastness
this is where we have made our stand.
We can not drill
to the very last drop
Nor can we ignore the
endless work of scientists
Who tell us
that we are heating up
our home...
and we had better change our ways.
There’s a cost to every delay
As we ride the wave
on the Pale Blue Dot
Suspended in a sun beam
The only home
we’ve ever known.
The Earth can ride it out
We cannot.

We live in a world of conspicuous consumption and style. Providers of our basic needs have created wants for products that are of the lowest-cost but the highest style. Continually changing the style and using plastic to replace many recyclable original containers simply because they cost less and sometimes, last longer. Far too long and into the environment and our bodies in terrible ways.
My home is filled with solid wood furniture, mostly 1928 wedding furniture that I inherited from a house I bought in 1975. The furniture is sturdy and beautiful, even antique. But most of us remodel our houses and change our furniture too often, in the name of style. Are you one of them? Wouldn't you rather save the earth?
