Implacable Karma


I suppose it should all be confusing, confounding
this infinite timeline,
or is it a circle of déjà vu?
and what of karma?
that implacable dog trailing us
biting at our backsides;
yes karma will get you…. in the end


we are wise ghosts of lifetimes past
and the naive harbingers of those to come


remembering falconers of ancient Egypt
the taste of honey wine and grain beer
still recognized on my tongue
how do I taste such inebriating gold
or yet feel rising waves of freedom
smoking lotus from shell pipe in a fragrant pool
until my senses reject reality?


how does the scent of the sacred river
still overflow the shores of my dreams?


if there are no ghosts, who am I
and how many lifetimes will it take to know?
and who are you, a specter of the past
appearing as an apparition of what once was?
are you here to reaffirm the best in me
or are you karma’s tool to punish the worst in me?
what are past and future? we can escape neither
