My Fortress

where dwells the ancient wisdom
that God has bestowed upon man
and what is the key to His kingdom
the fulfilling of foreordained plan?
protected in cleft of eternal rock
we find our perfect refuge at last
hidden in the hollow of His hand
until all life’s storms have passed
if God be for us, our only judge
then who can do to us any harm?
who can our salvation begrudge
where we’re safe from all alarm?
a mighty fortress tried and true
Jesus I lift up my eyes unto you

if God has fully justified His own
who then can correctly condemn?
judged by our God and God alone
falling into His hands; not of men
when from the terror in the night
He covers us ‘neath His great wings
hearing prayers, seeing our plight
deliverance He righteously brings
flying arrows may overtake our path
and our outcome seems to be grim
at all danger His anointed will laugh
as we find our strong shield in him
days are short and some bring sorrow
weep for a night, joy comes tomorrow
