spirits of the ancestors live in me
they whisper of other times and places
and if I dream I can hear and see
their soft voices and ancient faces
bones of ancestors decay in graves
on distant shores where I have journeyed
heart of each descendant wisdom saves
summons those both wise and learned
speak to me now, revered spirits of old
I am stumbling, help me find my way
your blood in my veins does not flow cold
within me in this world you yet stay
highland lairds, bronze native kings
fierce viking earls and english lords
each one their unique strength brings
each lifetime a wealth of wisdom affords
those who piously lived or greatly sinned
both the noble and the common one
instinctively teach what you know and then
let me join you when this life is done
with bones of the ancestors lay me down
and let me rest at last in their company
as the circle of life turns round and round
new generations may seek and listen to me
I really like the poem. You have written what I have felt for many years. I have done tons of research on my ancestors. It's exciting to go back and try to imagine what their lives were like. I have gotten to the 900's with one branch of the family tree. ALL our ancestors stand in a line that goes back hundreds of years. Thanks for sharing ....M
WE LEARN A LOT FROM OUR ANCESTORS WHETHER WE KNOW THEM OR NOT. 'CAUSE LIKE YOU SAID, THEY LIVE IN US. THANKS FOR SHARING, LA BELLE. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
This is such a great expression of something I feel from time to time.
Why shouldn't we celebrate it? Well done.

And then there are those who have no wisdom and could care less of their ancestors past. These are the ones who never learn and live a life all alone....
I guess we inherit more than our looks from those who've gone before. Memories, actions and so on become intertwined with us. Deep and atmospheric words painted here. I wonder if this is why many of us feel an affinity when we're at Saxon, Viking, Roman etc, castles, churches, homes of our kindred.
Long before we breathe our first breath, long before formalize our first thought, ancestral genetics were teaching us, programming our features. And so it is that we feel a sense of obligation on occasion to request guidance from them and seek to collate regarding imposing challenges or when possible rewards appear to be looming. We are who we are because their blood traces do run warmly through our veins. Haunting and filled with questions yet laced with a romantic's passion for poetic musings. You may write many renderings in this vein, no pun intended, as it is refreshing and entertaining. I enjoyed my time comingling with your words Belle.
Not only do we have their DNA that foretells often how we will behave (both well and badly), but we have a rich heritage of literature going back 2000 years when the Romans came to the Isles to feed the imagination of the poet and scholar. And yes, our contributions and our bones will add to the myth and history of the past long into the future after we are gone. Our legacy… Your legacy… Will live on and on.
Maybe now I know why I love the "Vikings" tv show so much. I must have just a little bit of Ragnar in me somewhere or maybe "Lagertha", ha!
Unique vision about ancestors and how all those before have some influence on our present life.

Impressive atmosphere in this LaBelle. From the small part I know of your oeuvre I would credit this (IMO) as one of your best. As I read I could hear a thick Irish dialect speaking it. Well written and well received. Peace...r
POWERFUL POEM!!!!!!!!!!! YOUR NAME WILL LIVE FOREVER IN THIS WORLD, DEAR La Belle!!!!!!!! YOU ARE ONE OF MOST TALENTED POETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Liana Margiva
Oh my! "Your blood in my veins does not flow cold." How I wish I could lay claim to that line. It made me think of my parents. Although they are gone from me, their blood in my veins does not flow cold. What a warm, wonderful thought of reassurance that they are always with me, and so will I continue to be with my sons and grandsons when I'm gone.
A wonderful theme intricately (and beautifully) laid out in simple rhythms and rhymes. I loved the way you were eventually able to intertwine past, present and future into a complete whole, not forgetting that the ancestors live without and within, both then and now. An evocation of the circle of life and the circle of the living. Well done. John
WoW! This could have been written about me, especially during the time I call my two lost decades. The thing is, I never knew my parents, so I have nothing to fall back on when writing about them. Even so I understand that the fact that I knew them not, makes no difference when reading your poem, Belle. They live inside and outside of me. I carry their bones, I'm living with "spirits of the ancestors live in me."
