“Old Man River”

There are days when the Ohio River
is like the mythical lazy Old Man,
his face wrinkled with fallen leaves,
bearded with summer moss.

There are days his soul is stained
with rotting driftwood, snaking scum
and now and then a human lump,
a victim of his sudden rages.

But there are days, like today,
when I can almost hear Mark Twain
tell a story in his slow Missourian drawl,
and smell the smoke from his cigar,
and see Huck and Jim skimming by
on a runaway raft,

when I can almost hear a calliope blow
as we hurry to the shore to greet
the big white showboat, and the Old Man
looks up with benevolent approval.

In my opinion, you write fine poetry, Lisa. You have personified the Ohio river for your readers (including me) in a most effective way. I live on a mountain above the mighty Fraser River in British Columbia and I know that a river has personality. Thank you for sharing your gift. Love and best wishes to you,

Regis

You painted this with much love for your old but still moving river. Real poetry.

Wonderful comparison and contract between a river now and then. Mark Twain added a special touch to your poem. We live near Indian Creek. It used to be clear as a bell. Do I need to tell you that it's a creek from......I wonder what Mr. Twain would say if he were alive today? My new poem? Maybe, we'll see....

Thank you Lisa!

Wonderful poetry, Lisa. You kept the tone of the days of yore constantly within the line which IO read with joy.

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
