Poem Artwork

Heavy’s the weight of the boulder uphill,

Rolling and rolling and rolling up still;

Tired are my bones and my flesh.

Erinnyes’ whip, with a furious crack,

Attacks my skin, tears the flesh off my back,

No hope for me to refresh.

Endless is my labour and pain uphill,

Rolling and rolling and rolling up still,

Labouring through day and night.

Having cheated death I’m punished to live,

Blood and sweat to the thirsty soil to give,

There’s never an end in sight.

Is there some hope to end the heavy toil,

Heal the bleeding wounds with cool soothing oil,

Mop the hot sweat off my brow?

Come, oh Hekate, light up the dark night,

With your flaming torch bring me sparkling light

In my soul, hope to allow.

Footnotes:

(from Greek Mythology)

Sisyphus, a king of Corinth, tried to cheat death and was condemned by the gods

forever to roll a heavy rock to the top of a mountain. Every time he reached the top the rock rolled back down, thus making him start all over again.

He was  whipped by Erinnyes, a fierce goddess – one of the Furies – who sought out the guilty on earth and also meted out punishment to the dead.

Hekate, a mysterious divinity, variously described as goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, the moon, ghosts and necromancy, light-bringer, guardian of cross-roads, etc.

Love the inner reading(s), Peter, all verses seeding each way advancing. Sometimes, reading such, I have to cry, tears away, you know? Before healing.

A refined piece of writing, Peter. Moreover, it also teaches. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Most impressive. One can but wonder is Sisyphus' labours would end had be but found satisfaction in the labour itself? In the journey rather than the elusive destination?

Sometimes it just seems like that is all we do....push forward to fall back! While Hekate may bring you light...God will give you the strength to continue...even when we do not feel His support!

Thank you for providing the references...I think it added greatly to your beautiful words!

If he stood in front of the rock as it rolled back down he could end it all...this reminds me of life in general and the struggles we have to go through to someday reach the top and maybe stay there...Ed, Rene & rufuz

Thanks for sharing this very interesting tale. The poetry flows so smoothly, making it easy to read. I feel Sisyphus's sorrow and strain, and hope with him for relief.

p.s.In the note on Erinnyes, did you mean to say, "sought out"?

This one is powerfully penned, Peter, especially the line,

"Having cheated death, I'm punished to live." Kind of a metaphor for life, isn't it?

Well done, my friend.

(((HUGS))) love and prayer, Karla.
