A poem inspired by the painting "Head of a Young Girl" by Pablo Picasso, 1945

Poem Artwork

Palms and cold cheeks

pressed against the condensation

of winter windows-

"If only I didn’t love him so," she said.

"Too young a woman to be his baby girl."

But no-no, no, no-

she knew they were all wrong about things

like sixteen years a lover’s albatross when really

it counted for nothing in the age of the souls-

the length of love and the capacity of hearts-

as if she didn’t wake every day with a heart full to bursting

with a love for him that she knew would never end-

as if her feelings were jacks and marbles

waiting to be tossed and caught,

rolled and traded,

on sidewalks trodden upon by lesser lights-

no one could tell or know of her torture defined

in the impossibility of separating this one as two

(soft petals from hard stems)

and yet they handed her red paper hearts

with white lacy edges with names

she never wished to hear

printed on them in block letters

but too young to know

but no one could deny

she loved so completely

till the day they both died

When we feel something, our emotions reconnect us with the present. It's always here and now, and time is not something that we take into consideration. I'm especially moved by the third stanza.

You know that age difference means nothing to me when it comes to love but in this world, it can be a "rough ride." I am always amazed at how you draw such inspiration and share it so vividly via your verses. I hope you know that I say this with great respect. Thank you, Michelle. Love and blessings to you,

I don't believe there is an age on love but it is heartbreaking when there is a young teenager in love with an older person who really do love that person. This is a beautifully heartbreaking write as love lived till death. Thank you for sharing.

Age differences between lovers should not impede love as long as the lovers are aware of the sacrifices that all too often must be made. You have captured well the love of a young woman for an older man and it touches the heart with the passion that only love can inspire. A while back I wrote a short story exploring and imagining what it must be like to have such a relationship...your poem captures so well what I was trying to get it. Very nicely done indeed my young friend.

Michelle,
"...as if her feelings were jacks and marbles waiting to be tossed and caught," is absolutely splendid and for me the central image of this great poem. I see a more fluent style here than in previous work and I admire it very much.

I love that opening sequence - and the rest of this beautiful, poignant piece - a masterwork inspired by an artistic great. Well done.
