Based on a painting of the same name by Jean-Charles Cazin (1841-1901), oil on canvas

Poem Artwork

there was always

someone in town

with a tale to tell

of love's departed

of lives restarted

and children down the well

whose business it was

no one could ever say

too busy were they listening

whether a tryst in the stable

a husband that's no longer able

or the Thomas baby's christening

all within back country lanes

where bandied about were many names

of whose spell he might be under

if she was a lady or a whore

if she could be trusted anymore

her reputation torn asunder

empty dirt roads long and wide

tongues crossover to the other side

not just the ladies but the men, too

craving a new sadness for their glee

strange joy at another's treachery

the many gossips scourge the few

you capture the essence of the painting and the essence of the gossip with your very last line, "the many gossips scourge the few" -- you've covered the subject in great depth and with fine poetic style -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

You've woven a story befitting the painting. Always a pleasure to read your work. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your kind words. I have had writers block for quite some time and it seems to have lifted.

I would select the same two lines as Regis ... so sad and pitiful, really, to take pleasure is anothers troubles or shortcomings. This piece is extremely effective, Michelle and very well written! Hugs, Elizabeth

Humans are strange creatures it seems. This is truly well done once again, Michelle. Love and best wishes to you,

As long as there are men and woman there will be gossip and those who delight in others pain. You captured this theme perfectly and your picture is perfect for it.

Michelle,

I love the life you bring to this and recognise it well...and the final stanza takes on another dimension, moves to an even higher plane.
Thank you for this fine work.
