London After Midnight

Based on the painting "Old London" by G. Harvey. I LOVE his work. I was writing this poem with a Victorian/Gothic/Jack the Ripper feel for fun :)Also, I am a huge Lon Chaney fan, so the title worked well (also the name of a Goth band that's real good, too )

Poem Artwork

They once loved London after Midnight,

before the long days of tears and fright,

when what darkness held was to blame,

for morbid tales of bloody gutter shame.

London hid at night with knife in hand,

in gas lit alleys where the beggars stand,

demanding of each passerby a pound, a pence,

and to give would be the best of common sense.

Horses hooves on cobblestones keep the beat,

to the constant rain that taps like a thousand feet,

Big Ben buries a stifled scream with its chiming heart,

below people play deaf to what miseries shall impart.

Feed them, the hungry, the sick, the cold,

Feed them the lessons of the bought and sold,

and you, standing there with a shocked face of sins,

knowing full well your depravity starts when night begins.

I like this poem with the painting alot. I saw a special on Jack the ripper and it was believed the killer could have been a Dr. but, apparently there was a famous painter at the time who painted scenes from the murders that were incredibly accurate......great poem! Morgan

Michelle, Ron Hull's review captures my sense of your poem and my views of the terror that is surely more pervasive in today's societies than ever before. It is an intensely worrisome scenario. I love your work. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

We can wax nostalgic now about the senseless killing of ladies of the night in London a long time ago. So many seem attracted to depravity in literature. I find myself putting it in my novels just to get reader attention. We never seem to learn from these dark tales. I recently saw the movie about, “Finding the Green River Killer,” and was shocked to find out that he killed 87 prostitutes and went undetected for over 20 years, only found by recently developed DNA evidence process. They are still among us–and killing.

Hi Michelle!
No matter the serenity evil always lurks, waiting like "Dracula" to strike at the unsuspecting when darkness comes. How important it is to be wearing the "armour" of God!
Superb interpretation of the photo and it's foggy sky.

Hugs,
Lena

Oh I love this Michelle! The eerie feeling flows from each line. Perfectly written to your theme. I'm a London-lover (complete Anglophile lol) so this was most enjoyable! Love the painting as well! ~Hugs, Elizabeth

The painting has a lot of detail. Your poem has some good imagery - Big Ben buries a stifled scream with its chiming heart -
I'm sorry about your illness. It must test you at times. thank you for reading my poem, Salt.
