Poem Artwork

Sons
shot in the back
as they scrambled for safety,
running scared from madmen,
cowards in camouflage.

    Son, my son,
your screams echo in my dreams.

Daughters
under attack
in their school gymnasium
on the first day of school,
stripped of celebration.

    Daughter, my daughter,
your screams echo in my dreams.

Mothers
holding their breath,
fingering list of the dead.
Inconsolable grief
only just beginning.

    Mother, my mother,
your screams echo in my dreams.

Fathers
spared terror, death,
sentenced to cruel remembrance,
thinking they should have been
there to shield and protect.

    Father, my father,
your screams echo in my dreams.

Their screams should echo loudly and fiercely in every single human being's dreams on this planet. Maybe that would finally stop this utter utter madness.

Extremely well penned, Dawn.

They must be stopped!
Our hearts are heavy for the survivors..
We can't change the hurt but we can console the soul.
We must pray there is no repeat.

Terrific write Dawn. You have masterfully scratched the surface of the inner fears that those with love and compassion feel. You did a wonderful job on this piece...thanks

Dawn this is heartwrenching, as it should be! I've cried and prayed over this until I'm done in! Imagine how the survivors feel!God be with them. Thanks for writing this it's very well done, for such
a horrific event!

Having just learned some very dark facts about my child's formative years and two people who abused her in the most mortifying way possible, I can certainly relate to the guilt that a parent can feel when their child is harmed. It's been eating me alive. This was a heart wrenching write Dawn. Michelle
