Poem Artwork

Dedicated to the memory of my brother-in-law Ralph, who died 13 years ago of AIDS-related pneumonia

Beloved
brother,
friend of mine,
diseased
and dying,
stricken –
    why you?
    why now?

Condition that
ravages your life,
ruptures your dreams
is so misunderstood.
Its modern-day
scarlet letter
marks you as
untouchable.

We stepped
lightly, carefully,
when the secret
came out
and walked
in wide circles,
called it common-sense
protection.

In your eyes we were
circus clowns
gathered ‘round you,
the lonely spectator,
your attention diverted
momentarily from pain
by performers preoccupied
with entertaining themselves.

Later, we sat with you
but often found no words
and, in our youth, rashly
turned our wordless pain
to anger directed
toward each other,
retiring early, rising
late each morning.

Outside the room
where we shoved
each other
you, the dying man,
waited, praying
for a peace
that never came
for us.

At the news
of his death,
we lay
in pools of grief,
stricken,
asking
    why you?
    why now?

Beloved
brother,
friend of mine,

Despite the circumstances you've described, Dawn, it sounds like Ralph was indeed loved, and knowing that must have brought some comfort to him.

this is a demonstration of humanity in its highest degree amd level. In my country people with Aids are abused and not given the protection and sympathy they deserve, let alone dedicate a poem when they die. I love the way you expressed your feelings and concerns which beyond doubt reflects your concerns and wise understanding to human environs.

Dawn, this was so well and wonderfully written. The sadness and the anger. The hurt and the wondering. Very moving is this write.

Death in instances like the one you describe is harder to bear than others. I understand your grief and frustration. Coming to terms with it is never easy, but we shouldn't stop seeking His understanding to help us towards acceptance. God does bless and help those who mourn!

so hard to know what to say when a loved one is dying. Nice expression of that time and feelings.

Life is very short Dawn....
And there is no time for self recriminations...
Tragic poem / story...
May his soul rest in peace..amen
