Beneath
a field of stars
I lay
last night
and imagined
      you
up there
playing soccer
among the bright
night sky
lights.

It cheered
my spirit to
think of you
that way.
In the
knowledge
of your
     joy,
I fell asleep
and into
your safe arms
in a dream.

I awoke
in the morning
and felt
the beating
of my
     heart
stronger
than usual.
I realized then
that two hearts beat
together.

As the first ray
of daylight
spread
its warmth
across
the flat
     horizon
I thought
I heard you say,
“High five. I’m 
still with you,
girl.”

And I
smiled
through tears
and said,
"You bet you
are," as
a fading star
twinkled
its goodbye
and the sun
     rose
upon my dark
life.
