A Leaf Fell in My Lap Today

A leaf fell in my lap today,
stirred sadness within my soul.
’Twas brown like earth with touch of fire
and green-golden specks besides.

I twirled fallen leaf by its stem,
remembered love’s dying days:
glorious departure, my best,
last wish cast upon a wind.

I brought that leaf inside with me,
held it tight unto my breast –
telephone ringing startled me,
pulled me from remembrance.

“Hello,” I said, determined now
to live in spring, not fall.
Silence on the line, gentle click.
