 "THIRTEEN"
(By: Sheri C. Uy)

Please take me back
Somewhere in my past
Where in a single instance
Our glances locked
When I could see no one
But a reflection of a girl
Wanting to be a woman
Within that single glance

Please take me out

From this crushing gloom
Where I hide my passion
And gnash my teeth
In the middle of the storm
Bid my love to come
And save me from the claws
Of my own lonely mind

Please look back at me

Once, twice…before you go away
Teach me to keep and remember
That special look and smile
Carefully hidden somewhere
Locked away, silent and still
Deep within the memory
Of a thirteen year old girl

So poignantly written that it is hard for the reader not to be drawn into the verses without feeling nostalgic. The deep longings of the child who was on the brink of womanhood and the yearnings of a woman to be that child again. Deep and meaningful.

Best wishes,
Elizabeth

I can relate to the yearning for that moment in the past when things were clearer, calmer, with only simple concerns. I loved the line where you see a girl and want to become a woman in one glance. Beautiful. Liz

Wonderful how you bring out the longing. Make us see and hear and feel the child and the woman, insofar as they can be separated.
Thank you, Sheri! <3 'Pea' <3

Heavily cloaked in nostalgia, this poem is a jewel of memory and feeling. I'm sure we all have felt this way at one time or another, which makes your theme universal. I like the way you draw in the reader, then regale us with your colorful and passionate recollections. Well done, Sheri.

A beautiful remembering filled with deep longings captured in verses. A feeling of being 'almost but not quite'. A sweet smile of anticipation and freedom. Very nice.

Best wishes,

Ah, that wonderful first stirring of young love... who can forget it? Sweet memories are made to linger in the mind and heart of one who understands the true meaning of a special smile, even in her tender age. Poignant, Sheri.
