Poem Artwork

347 A. Street

Kicking at warped plywood,
what used to be a window,
gives out, then in, making way,
breaking my heart a final time,
as I step off the fallen leaves,
for ass-backwards traveling
through a future I thought lost,
hoping memories shaped as tears
will subside, ending the flood
that has kept my future at bay,
continuing to sabotage my efforts
by erasing perhaps three or more
of every five strides I manage,
my soul distracted by the sounds
of a few hundred or so footfalls,
I estimated as failed steps.

Gaining entrance,
a leg up and an arm short,
a nail tears into my flesh,
grabbing the seat of my pants,
this breaking and entering marking
where I will exit the rabbit hole,
a tad larger leaving than going in,
after finishing my tour of duty,
 driving history from dark corners,
 remembering the shared secrets
of all our forgotten dreams,
hearing the life created here,
echoed in my heart for all time,
before I make that final break
through what used to be a window
into my newly planted garden.

It’s a poor sort of memory that only works backwards.  -Lewis Carrol  1832-1898

reading this I smelled the old wood, the scent of dust and dampness... I think you've captured the mood really well here... the old clashing with the new, or the survivor... the same with the past and future... and the tear-shaped memories...

This sounds like me stumbling through my grandma's garage at her farm. Lots of old boards to break and old nails to step on. Lots of memories to walk through. Wonderful poem.

This is uncharacteristically vague, anne. Whazamatter: can't go home again? I have a feeling there is another poem hiding behind these lines.

powerful writing, really "hit home" with me. great insight into how our past and our perspective of our past can toy with present and future. Dawn
