You are absolutely right. Christmas should be in our hearts rather than in conspicuous consumption. Now that's what I call "cutting back" or "downsizing." ;-)
I don't understand the insane need to cut down live trees for Christmas and then throw them out in the trash after a week or two. A roommate of mine once had a beautiful potted juniper that he completely covered with lavish gold decorations. After the Christmas season, the juniper was dead.
In 1975, when I acquired my cottage in West Virginia, a neighbor told me that she and her husband had potted Christmas trees and then, planted them after Christmas. She had beautiful conifers around the property. One was over 30 feet tall and beautifully proportioned.
Yes, the Christmas glow is in our hearts. It does not matter how large or small our Christmas tree is and how it glows. It's that glow in our hearts that shines most.
