Even though you never see color and don't have a bigoted bone in your body, others can bring it to you. Even with this experience, all my children grew up loving everyone no matter race, sex or religion.

Too Young to Understand!

My son had a very dark complexion, he looked just like his dad.
He was such a happy child, hardly ever got mad.
But when our neighbor teased,
“Here comes that little black boy from down the road,”
My son didn’t understand, but it put him in fighting mode.

My son knew he was being made fun of but much too little to understand.
He didn’t know who the black boy was, for he was only tanned.
We invited a friend to our pool party, who was black as black could be.
I wanted my son to meet him, for Bill was so special to me.

I introduced them right away and my son looked up and stared.
Bill said hello to him, knelt down and smiled with loving care.
My son asked a dreaded question, “Do you get white in the winter time?”
Bill replied, “No Jimmy, I stay dark all year long with this black skin of mine.”

I wanted to wring my neighbor’s neck and slay him right then and there.
But naturally he was not around, boy, this wasn’t fair.
I thought of many ways to slay him, even with a gun.
For what he did to me and what he did to my little son.

But Bill understood my son was just a child and wasn’t a bit upset.
He was one of the funniest and nicest men that my son has ever met.
So when someone calls you names that you don’t quite understand.
Don’t get angry or upset, you just might be tanned.

For the longest time, my children didn't understand why people called them black... they view themselves as having brown skin, not black... they just figure some people still don't know their colors... :~)

Prejudism is something that is hard to understand...

Good write, and such a tribute to yours.

Today, Scandinavia, 2008, they "understand" color people, accepting them is another can of beans, but it is improving.
Sadly, a very very few of those new landsmen do things that put a general blame on all of them, and then you hear "didn't a told you so?"
Bigotry for some is like a third leg, without it they can't go anywhere.

Georg
