Lost in Thought

in a old city--
miles in between us
with views of buildings,
apartments and with people
who smiled politely
but have few kind words to say.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way!

Contemplating
if I should just flip a coin
to determine the outcome
of my life—
to be a mother and a wife,
or a murderer of my unborn child.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way!

You said the choice was mine.
How easy those words made
your bed and disarrayed mine
till sheets tangled around
my neck and I felt like
I had been hung-out to drip-dry.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way!

My mother, she always said,
you make the bed you lay-in.

Its funny how mothers tend
unconsciously with their
silent hands, always guiding.
But then, her hands washed
me away when I was only ten.

The only thing I could agree upon,
is a thought that lingers….

It wasn’t supposed to be this way!

You have managed to maintain poignancy without slipping into bathos. This is an unflinching "slice of life" write.

As I read this I felt like I could be her saying these words. This is what makes a great writer. Bringing experiences to life that we have not experienced. Fantastic write!

i hate it when i hear a guy say it's up to you in a situation like this...talk about dumping...it took two to create a child, why should one person have to live with the consequences alone...this is a very good, very introspective poem that i can really relate to.

You know my beautiful friend, whenever I read your outstanding work, I am compelled to reach out and scream at all the injustices that far too often, it seems a decent human being must endure in order to survive the unnerving onslaught of ignorance! This stunningly well-penned composition obviously has struck deep within the rivers of my soul, which is always a “good thing.” Whenever I first saw the title, it reminded me of one I wrote, which hopefully soon, I’ll re-post all that I had in my Den. However, this one surly strikes out at the very foundation of life, and it was an absolute pleasure to read it, although it is a very heart-wrenching composition, it is what poetry is all about! Thank you for sharing your timeless work and wonderful talent. Take good care and be well.

These Black and Blue Red Zone Days by Aberjhani

Just as life during the pandemic was color-coded with different hues representing different levels of danger, life in its aftermath has become shaded in similar ways. As a self-styled “Seeker of Beauty with Beauty,” (borrowing from a quote by W.E.B.
