A Glint in Loki's Eye

by Kalikiano Kalei — Read all 118 poems by Kalikiano Kalei

Man proposes, God disposes. Sometimes, despite the best laid plans of mice and mortals, anticipated seductions appear to run aground, fouled upon the hidden reefs of capricious, fickle kismet. This recollects one such Arabian Night that ended up as a solitary, legubrious, drunken soliloquy with the stellar heavenly bodies, rather than as a salubrious menage de deux with a very specific Earth-bound heavenly body of the Swedish persuasion.

A Glint in Loki’s Eye

High up in the Stygian ebony of desert skies
The stellar fires of deepest unending space
Perfuse our thoughts upon the merest twinkle
In the stony gaze of whatever gods exist;
The murmur of voices, swept on soft breezes,
Punctuate the darkness that surrounds us
As we drink and muse on life’s eternal drama
In benighted realms of coruscated thought.

Later, the starry skies shine blindly down,
Rejecting assignations of animistic gravity,
Pulling back from blackest insensate emptiness
In vaporous streams from every pore of the body.
Lovely Laidia, daughter of Loki, poses elegantly
On the verge of eternal ancient echoes to
Occupy my thoughts as the ebb of tidal wine
Floods the desiccated lakebed of my rumination.

Forged from icy crystal on Thor’s Artic hearth,
All vital, exotic human warmth forever damped,
The cool desert air surrounds us, chills us, draughts
Replacing the solar warmth that has fleetly vanished
With the appearance of the luminous full moon.
Before you left, I felt the electric spirit deflect
Upon the smooth exterior of your female armor,
A glint in the unbearably bright mirror of Loki’s eye.
