So much fur, so little time!

by Kalikiano Kalei — Read all 118 poems by Kalikiano Kalei

As a certified jaded, cynical, grouchy, snarky, intemperate, impatient and endlessly critical old fart, there are moments when I have a nearly overwhelming desire to choke the collective living sh*t out of that plague of 'stupid-virus-affected' people who seem to have us all in their mindless thrall, these days. And fortunately, at such moments, I also have my luxuriously furry Husky girl who graciously lends me her ears (did she somehow study Shakespeare during her puppyhood?!) to stroke, a mood-modifying therapy that is far better and vastly more effective than any $120/hour professional practitioner of the DSM-5's prodigious compendium could possibly recommend! [Besides, who wants to be behind bars and have a 3.5-inch-wide anal sphincter?]

Poem Artwork

So much fur (to ear is human, but to Husky ears divine!), so little time...

There’s so much ear to get to,

Down that furry Mayan Well,

That plummets down

          And down

                 And down

Past the lower depths

Of auricular Husky Hell,

To break through at last,

In the neural pleasure zone,

An endless urge to quell

         Both human irritations

                 And canine itchy spells!

Woo-woo!

A+ for originality and humor. Dropping you back to an A
for pilfering a photo without the canine's consent.

Dogs certainly have massage down pat. They love it when we scratch them in the right place and we love that soft fur that we lost when we decided to start wearing clothes. But why on the top of our heads? Right where we need it the most?

Only encountered a husky once about 1977 at my West Virginia cottage. What I remember about that dog was not his beautiful fur. There was no petting going on, but his piercing blue eyes that seemed to look into my soul to see what kind of a person I was.

But my encounter with a neighbor's malamute was as you describe. She was huge. But if you shaved off all that winter fur she might have been actually skinny underneath. All I remember was putting my arms around her great body and feeling like I had landed on the deepest carpet in the world, so luxurious and soft that I sunk right in. I think she would have been enough alone for a three dog night. ;-)
