Fiction ~ Inspired by Genia Polischuk, murdered September 2003 prior to testifying against a serial rapist.

Poem Artwork

Dolled up in red stilettos and black leather miniskirt
so tight it hikes up her cheeks, the working girl's hips
sway in time to the hustle of The Strip.

Heads turn, men's, some women's.

A prospective john cruises by in a shiny new Jag;
she takes a calculated breath to catch his eye.

Sheer silk whispers against rose petal breasts
as she leans into the car...
Hey handsome, want some of this?

Sure, sweet thing,
the john hisses through a smirk
as he reaches over and opens the door.

One long leg, stockinged only with a tan
enters the car first, followed
by a tight adolescent body.

Good evenin' hon, my name's Venus.
What do you want me to call you?

Turning away in silence, the john
drives out of the city into the desert night.

A quarter moon--crime scene investigators
ask the age-old rhetorical question...
What could be so bad as to make these kids turn tricks?

Now in the arms of the Goddess, her answer is clear...
Because I knew nothing of intimacy
I searched for love in the arms of strangers, but
while they used Venus, I'd whisper in their ear...

My name is Genia.

I knew Genia, her mother, her father and her stepmother. She has 1/2 siblings, 1 brother and 2 sisters and as far as I know her dad still lives in Phoenix, her biological mother passed away when Genia was a child. Genia was born deaf as her mother had diabetes and passed from it. Genia's stepmother was horrible to her. Genia was a good kid but took abuse from her stepmother and her dad did nothing. My heart is so saddened, especially when I read the poem. I could see her visually (as I hadn't seen her in years)and it angered me that she had come to this horrid end. She did have a silly streak in her.

This poem burrows deep within my core. The pain and the senselessness are blaring. I'm always the one to wonder who might've saved her. What had to have been different - what are all the variables that merge to such a wrenching conclusion? Who contributed to what he was and at what point might he have chosen a different path? I also wonder - what does it feel like to write these words? Does it put you in that place, in that time? How do you open yourself without letting it settle in? You are such a wonderful writer; your fearlessness and willingness to venture here speak volumes of your ability and scope as well as they sway and dizzy that part of me who wants to only see the sun. In admiration, Gina ~

Hi Leslie, your meaningful poem has captured my interest. It is sad yet honest, difficult yet real. Life isn't always smooth, sometimes it is bumpy but it's worth the ride. Thank you for sharing. Blessings to you.

Best wishes,
Sheri

"Because I knew nothing of intimacy"
Of course this has become pandemic in modern society. Wounded by men, wounded by women - people shut down and embrace every evil bird that circles above their miserable lives in an effort to fill all the voids. There is no disguise or adornment in this poem Leslie, it's written quite real and quite well. Loneliness and misery and danger are everywhere.
Blessings to you friend ...

Reality of an ill-fated profession and the results of exchanging sex for dollars that can never be spent as death of Genia walks in spirit through the shopping malls, strutting its sexy stuff in the dress shops and shoe stores where stilettos pay tribute and author Leslie Eugenia Hoffman writes the explicit facts of a life gone way too soon...

Love,
Sage
