This is true . when i was growing up it was okay to say hello to your neighbour or smile to passerbys. In today's climate it may mean the difference between going about your day or not seeing another. Fear is a factor which sometimes holds us back from achieving, being or just receiving. Love thy neighbour? In nuclear society this is almost impossible.
Love is becoming extinct, for fellow man, even self love is questionable in that it is becoming selfish. I can relate to this man on the wall but i had strong hands to pull me back before i went over it.
Someone once said "show me love". It is all around but its invisible. You have to feel it.
Photo is of The Great Wall in China. And is not the actual wall man was sitting on but is symbolic.

Poem Artwork

There's a man who sits on a wall

he's not very short and he's not

very tall

just average as they would say

but how is he feeling today?

the same as yesterday.

my aunt says life has got him down

and not a mother soul is there for him

i am wondering if i should be a good

samaritan

but i pass him by

i want to cry

he's about my age

but what if he should fly into a rage

or follow me around

so i pass him without a sound

One day i say

i will look him in the eye

and smile

but his head has been bowed

for quite a while

I don't know his name

and i feel so much shame

as if i am to blame

in doing nothing at all

for this man on the wall

There is so much truth to what you have expressed. In this day & age we risk too much to be the "Good Samaritan" as often as we would like but the fact is that the empathy lies in the goodness of our heart such as you have written in this masterpiece.

You express a sad truth about our world today, Andrea. This is much along the same theme as "No One Touches You," a poem that I posted here not too long ago. Thank you for sharing this offering. Love and peace to you,

Regis
