I hope that this poem doesn't lead anyone to think that I fail to
appreciate the rich and colorful tapestries that other countries
and cultures represent. This is simply a tribute to my native land.
As the 4th approaches, I think it is natural to brag a tad. "Patriotism"i
is so often misused, I find myself searching for a better word.
Hard to find! All I can think to say is that, as far as I am concerned,
true patriotism embraces difference. Within and without!
Thank you for being here.

Summer in America-?
She IS America!
Her Independence
Day on the Fourth
of July. Her beaches,
her mountains, her
green and gold waves
of grain. Her lakes, her
rivers, her pools, her
parks. She is even more
beautiful when whipped
cream clouds float across
summer-blue sky. To me,
her dandelions are every
bit as gorgeous as her
roses, her creeks as
mesmerizing as her caves.
And the perfume she
wears! Wouldn't think
hot dogs and hamburgers
on a backyard grill would
complement honeysuckle,
and vice versa. Sea salt,
Kool-aid, mint plucked from
a gsrden border, corn-on-the-
cob, just-right melons, yum!
Little sweat, assorted bugs,
sunshine children and pets
carry in from playgrounds
and yards. So many different
flowers. A shower sweetens
the air. A storm waiting to
happen tastes a bit like copper
smells. Add the thirst of all
those plants. Soil smells of
earthworms and a mysterious
something that is needed to
grow. Gasoline has gone up,
so more of us are staying
close to home. Have I
mentioned the natural feel
of Home, come summer? Joy
of cooling off in a wading
pool or under a garden
hose? Haul the fan down
from the attic. . .ahhhhhh.
Have I mention how it feels
to rare back in a rickety
web-backed chair and breathe
in a star-and-firefly-lit night?
So many riches, so little
time. Nothing like an old-
fashioned summer to help
us see just how rich we are.
Yes, indeedy, Sweet Pea, and I totally agree 100%... I have only been across The Pond twice - both in the last year or so - and I am totally smitten. Firstly with New York, which seems more homely to me and more genuinely friendly than my native London; second, with the five states I whistle-stopped through down Southwest: Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas. I LOVE IT! And can't wait to return a third time... and fourth... fifth... Embracing diversity - AND VASTNESS!!!! - was the key for me. Keep singin her song, Pea! I'm chorussing along with ya! :)) xx
YOU ARE SO RIGHT...THERE ISN'T ANY PLACE ELSE IN THE WORLD WHERE ONE CAN ENJOY FREEDOM AND ENJOYMENT OF SUMMER AS WE DO IN AMERICA...OF THAT I AM SURE! THIS IS A WONDERFUL WRITE...FILLED WITH THE PHRASES AND IMAGERY THAT SOLIDLY SUPPORTS YOUR THEME. THANKS FOR SHARING AND GOD BLESS. JOYCE - HIS INSPIRATIONS
I believe in a one world one soul one all together. I know where you're coming from, Pea. Thanks for sharing. I live and love in Canada. It doesn't get any better. Love and peace,
Doesn't get much better 'n this. As the daughter of/sister of/niece of/cousin of Veterans, as well as a USAF Veteran, myself, it is a privilege and an honor to call the United States my homeland, warts and all, she's still the best place to live. Especially when I read poems like this - one of your (MANY) bests, my friend, thank you, well done! I salute YOU.
Wonderful write! And we can all add to this list of sights, sounds and smells of America, which does include other cultures--adding to our texture and beauty. Happy Fourth of July, Phyllis!

In "A Touch of Your Presence" are words that would inspire, encourage and strengthen one's soul when faced with challenges and difficulties and to know the awesomeness of God's power.
Only as free as the padlocked prison door" - Phil Ochs
I mean this not as criticism but as addendum. A good poem can set my mind to wandering. This poem did just that.
'true patriotism embraces difference' Exactly!
Great message, Pea.
