Poem Artwork

Might know it would rain day and night.
Dawn will be so grey, it won’t recognize
itself.   Fog’s runny as that slop they slap
on your plate on the inside, but I see
evidence of clots.  Not going to get lighter,
is it.  Doesn’t help that streetlights along
here are bull’s-eyes for construction rubble.
Damn, but it’s cold.  Feet are getting soaked.
These boots suck big-time.  Ought to check
Goodwill’s return policy--laugh if I could.
“No ballroom suit,” the guard joked as he
tossed it at me.   “Got that right,” I squeaked..
Give you skivvies, a fiver, and a ticket
to Revolving.  Don’t look for anyone to
be waiting.    Smeared face just passed
half-hidden by a hood.  Was it an omen?
Walk fast.  As blood ribbons from the tail
of a cruising black-and-white, I offer up
thanks to a god doesn’t believe in me,
and never has.   Makes two of us.

Superb stream of consciousness poetry. The images are more graphic than in most movies. "...blood ribbons from the tail of a black and white" WOW!

i love this, especially the way you turn things around at the end-a god who doesn't believe in me--well done!

Love this gritty, get down and dirty view of leaving the inside for the bleak revolving door ahead. There's a novel in it.

...yes, that dawn that doesn't recognise itself ...how resonant!...sets a sombre mood and that tone of harsh circumstantial truth in the almost off-hand lines, the mono-dialogue, the mutterings...the consistency throughtout is so worthwhile and demands from the reader, oh how it demands, Pea.

Phyllis Jean, you described the scene and emotions very effectively -- I felt as though I was there observing and listening -- even though I have no idea what the emotions of such an event really are -- your thoughts made it all a very plausible scenario -- "bull's eyes" rather than "bull's-eyes" and "squeaked" rather than "sqeaked" I am sure you intended -- a most enjoyable read my dear friend -- may peace and love be always with you -- Jon Michael

You nailed this one as easily as if you had been the one getting released. I have never been in prison but I have gone more than once to pick up a certain relative of mine. Sadly the prison he was in Dorchester Federal Prison to me was too easy on them. WHen released he was given brand new Levi jeans, jacket, shirts, new sneakers, enough money to keep him for a few months and if they didn't have a place to go to they had a half way house set up. So maybe a little more of your way may be better...

Yes he does, I certainly do. I love the way you crafted this piece. After all who likes dark clouding raining days. Except if you are walking with your love.

GOD BLESS YOU, PHYLLIS
