Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder!

Poem Artwork

When I was young I was so shy

Insecure, afraid of my own shadow

Yet, people seemed to take to me

Mentors, teachers, encouraging and kind

Reaching, stretching, overachieving came

naturally, my own worst enemy, my own

competition...

Skinny, almost anorexic, then pain set in

the weight went another direction, it was

a saving grace...being ugly was my goal

Being able to disappear, vanish, be phantomlike

was what I thought would be protection

Who I saw in the mirror was not who others

seemed to see... How could they think I am pretty

When all I see is flaws and failure within myself

In spite of the negatives, success seemed to be

my legacy, never stopping, reaching, running

away from who I am, afraid...they'd discover

under the surface, the scars, the ugliness, the

disfigurements, the tolls that poor health came

to be, while on the outside, one could not see

the real me.... the scars were hidden, always

being modest, don't touch me!

It's been this way all my life; when in reality most don't know, cannot see, would never guess....

Yet...I know... one cannot fool oneself....

Mirrors don't lie...and as time goes, the years pile and then I realize, that it's who I am underneath that matters most...the goodness that I know is me...and so it goes... the insecurities do fade, yet some will always remain, and then last night....

Being sick, so sick these past weeks...concerned that perhaps I may not really get better, perhaps it's all caught up with me.. I wondered... How can my love want me?

As I wrapped my gown around my body, always covering myself from neck to toe, he said,"why do you do that?"  the tears were almost there...then I said, almost in a childish voice... "I just don't want you or anyone to see all the scars...they are so ugly...and they make me feel ugly".....

Like an angel he smiled at me.... "My darling girl...to me you are beautiful...inside and outside... always have been...and to me.... I have never seen ugly scars.... to me.... they are beautymarks!"

Can you imagine?  My entire life I have been embarrassed and ashamed of the many surgeries, the scars that took their toll...even with the plastic surgery to remove some of them; reducing the numbers so I could live with myself... and with those simple, yet beautiful words.... a lifetime of pain came crashing down....

Those are not scars...they are beautymarks!!

We are so hard on ourselves knowing every flaw about us. The internal scars may not be seen but their effects are. You husband was right about scares being beauty marks, testiments to our strength and rezilliance. Wonderfully emotional write.

Don't worry about the scars because it's the inner beauty that matters the most.

Oh a beautiful write and heart pouring words in
"SCARS ARE FOREVER."
Glad you know that scars are not what makes us
as they say we are our worse critics.

Continued blessings and I enjoyed the read.

Take care,
Gwendolyn

Dear Linda...dear, dear Linda...
Your words made me cry. I could have penned some of them for it was as if you were writing from my heart. My poem about the same topic is "Mirrors Never Lie." Thank goodness for the man who is your mirror and who loves you enough to share with you the beauty and truth that we all see and know about you.

Love you, my friend!

This is such a revelation that when it sinks in it is like a weight being lifte. When my heart gave in at 45 and I was forced into retirement I felt like a total failure, all my years working, being a father and a husband, a writer and a community volunteer were it seemed to me forgotten and now I was washed up. The worst of it though was I didn't look sick, so people made fun of me for things I couldn't do, for using a disability plate, for not working and of course this made my self esteem dissappear until I was struggling to keep my head from swimming in depression. No one has the right to judge us and yes the scars we bear whether outtside or in are ones we earn.

You know the scars on the outside? Not as painful as those on the inside, for being made to feel less than perfect. None of us is; all of us have our own scars, inside and out. You are gorgeous - in words, in appearance - as a friend and mentor - yes, you. YOU inspire ME. Thank you, Linda. Powerfully penned sadness, with hope at the end - beauty marks. Grab hold of that and never forget it. :)

Oh Linda,

Our mind is so powerful, yet at the same time so vulnerable. Making us see in ourselves what others don't. You have a caring partner who can see the real you; a sweet lady that glows.
