Ants and Roaches

(A prosetry observation) Ants and roaches have been around millions of years and give no indication of
becoming extinct. We on the other hand…

Poem Artwork
Ants and Roaches

How often the question
How often the ignoring
How often the reality
That as a species
We live lives
According to someone else’s purpose

Perhaps

Too many move through life
Embracing factotum
Embracing servile doctrine
Pushing religion
Obsessing scholastic attainment
Conquering career lures

While forgetting

Fulfillment eludes man-made designs
Reliant instead on discovery
The inner being transparent

Many hold
We ignore our divine destiny
To Be

Such a quandary
This idea of Being
Thinking we know what we want
What we need
Who we truly are

Yet

Few choose to seek “their truth”
Opting instead to crawl through endless trenches
Of waste and human rubble
Enduring razor-like suffering
Only to remain a stranger to one’s self

Sadly
These scars of self-mutilation subtly spread
Metastasizing into bondage of heart and mind
Leading to perhaps one last question

Will our species ultimately become
But alien anthropological studies
Proving our existence as a dot under the cosmic microscope
But an ironic exercise
For revealing who we ultimately
Were not?

Or

Might the oldest instinct of the planet
Finally kick in?

Ants and roaches
Know survival
We should know more

Do we?

maybe we'll become studies for lower orders!
a mad thought certainly, but it's probably all we deserve.
ants and roaches and the mighty scorpion can survive almost
anything because unlike us they are not delusional or given
to silly speculation;
i like your style here, Odin, questioning, undogmatic, modest
and respectful

finding your own center and being true to it are far to often ignored in many a life

Quite powerful. And I've often thought that this planet would do just fine without any humans on it; but all life would end without the insects - unlike us, they actually have important work to do.

there is, sublimated between the lines of this ponder, some inner self that sits, opaque rather than transparent, in judgement upon our species, upon its cant, but it is not canned, it is a flexible, malleable, benevolent judgement, urging us all towards a liberation that might one day know more than the ants and roaches, more than mere survival... for if the fittest are to do more than merely adapt, they must recognize the reality that the true religions practice, a spirit that spells the end of cages, and that is not as Archibald Macleish suggests a poem--though it might, in the broadest sense of the word be pure poetry, but rather a metaphysical modus operandi that enlivens and ennobles, that embraces unity in the midst of diversity, pluralism in the midst of unanimity, and paradoxically still even further, makes the abnormality of standing up for one's faith and believe as normal as questioning that same faith, that same belief. Time is part of the trial, and as long as the judgement takes, time will prove what even ants and roaches know is just rudimentary knowledge, after all. We hold humanity to a higher standard, after all. Higher even than instinct. That's the spirit!
