Love's Pawnshop

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Love, like most other experiences, has a price to pay, or a debt to honor. Yet, is that the lesson to be learned?

Poem Artwork
Love’s Pawnshop
by Odin Roark

Unable to pay the debt
Love is often pawned
Sympathy as a claim check
Stuffed deep in pockets of suffering

Such self-deprecation roams the streets
Perplexed with using the tender
As peace offering to the beloved
A gesture risking resentment
Nothing conducive to healing

Perhaps better spent on survival-type passion
Allusion’s princely blind beggar with pencils
Rewards for the coin-drop sound in the cup
Solicitude’s offering without expectation
Without questionable agenda

Such is the giving spirit
Often in trouble
Never without company
Welcoming emotion’s exchange
Leaving behind longing’s conundrum
To examine itself truly naked

Sincerity’s immunity
Impervious to manipulation
Or desire’s self-deceit
Once the reward
Now but a cast-aside
A melting of chicanery’s
Falsity of spirit

Later

Amidst midnight shadows
A lowly pawn ticket of imagination
Embraces the enigmatic unsharpened pencil

They rest side by side
Atop life’s universal shelter
Where loveless anxiety takes cover
Awaiting another day
Perhaps THE day
When needs will find
Love’s pawnshop ready
To teach them as well

Precious lessons

Somewhere

Out there

Your poem reads like a fine country song. Leaves one feeling rather sad and lonely but with a glimpse of hope for a better future.

Peace, love and abundant blessings,

Such is the giving spirit..love's pawnshop ready?
Perhaps THE day love is.

I, like so many, spent a lot of time and agony over lost love. It took me a long time to figure out that there was nothing that I could do to change the outcome in spite of my best efforts, fumbling my way through disappointment after disappointment.

When I lost so many friends through no fault of my own have to become paralyzed, I realized that while there were many fish in the sea, my sea had become a pond and I had to settle for whatever came along. I don't miss those love sick days.

Love does have a price to pay, but I think it's usually worth it.

That cannot be the lesson to be learned. The price - the debt - such a small portion of the overall package, and yet it is when that portion becomes 'all consuming' that we fall apart. It amazes me that this tiny segment can bloom into a full-blown virus. Makes you wonder if love really exists, or is it merely an enigma to render the reality as palatable.

Unique visualization. I note you choose your words carefully. Tripped on this line: Atop life’s universal shelter(?) But the pawn shop does give rise to lessons, whether love is abandoned or with some effort, reacquired. Somewhere out there? Isn't everything!
